The Paris Conservatory Flute Album: 16 Short Lyric Pieces for Flute and Piano edited by Nancy Andrew and Clifford Benson

This collection of 16 sightreading test pieces set for the prestigious Prix de Concours at the Paris Conservatoire is full of delights. None of the these composers was a flute player but each work is beautifully written to showcase the expressive qualities of the instrument with great insight and flair. Not all were originally composed for flute and piano so Clifford Benson has sensitively reconstructed piano parts where necessary. This is such a lovely book which really enriches the flute repertoire – a must for all flute players! Difficulty Guide: 6-8

Compilations always represent very good value even if you already own some of the pieces included and this book is no exception. The repertoire here is more diverse than often so along with the Bozza Aria you will find pieces by Augusta Holmes and Reynaldo Hahn, gems by Mel Bonis and Germaine Tailleferre, and the wonderful Lili Boulanger Nocturne. The bonus is the complete Arrieu Sonatina. This book is definitely worth a look! Difficulty Guide: 6-9
Flute Solos from the Paris Conservatory edited by Martha Rearick

This is a real flute-player’s book as it’s full of pieces associated with the Paris Conservatoire and written between 1850 and 1920. These are not the block-busters but smaller gems that have largely been forgotten. The list of composers included looks like a Who’s Who of flute players of the day – Tulou, Altes, Hennebains etc – and each piece is relatively short but unmistakeably French. Some, like Tityre by Dubois are well-known but mostly they will be unfamiliar. This book is a treat! Difficulty Guide: 6-8
