Valerie Coleman: Matisseries for Solo Flute
Valerie Coleman is a very creative composer as well as a fine flute players so it’s no surprise that these five short vignettes capture the essence of Matisse’s works and which challenge flute playing techniques and rhythmic control. The score includes thumbnails of the works which is really helpful. Matisse would have been completely delighted by the vision in the pieces and we should be delighted that we get a chance to bring them to life! Difficulty guide: 8-9
Feodor Akimenko: Idylle for Flute and Piano, Op. 14
This heartfelt Idyll from the Ukranian composer Theodore Akimenko (1876-1945) is simple and very effective. The piece develops through from a plaintive cadenza, a warm and generous main theme, a gentle scherzo to a peaceful ending. It’s lovely to play, great to listen to and just beautiful! edited Karen North: Inspiring Flute Duets
Karen North has commissioned all fifteen duets in this book and what a varied collection of interesting pieces they are. They cover a broad spectrum of musical styles, become increasingly more difficult as the book progresses and include pieces with an imaginative use of simple extended techniques. Varying time signatures also add plenty of character. This is a great buy for anyone who likes something just that bit different and would make an ideal companion to any other more standard volume of duets. Difficulty Guide: 6-8
Nicole Chamberlain: Shush O’Clock for Flute Quartet
This imaginative piece is excellent if your group is mixed ability with some good players, and is willing to try anything. Take out the alternative techniques and the writing is straightforward – a simple 4/4 structure in B flat major with easy rhythms and notes. Add in the key clicks and the beatbox-style syllables and you enter a whole new sound world which can be really exciting. This is a great introduction for anyone wanting to try something more adventurous so give it a try – it’s something completely different! Difficulty Guide: 3-6
